AerLingus Aggressively Sells Insurance

AerLingus has recently started to aggressively sell insurance every time you now buy a flight. Instead of the usual on site offer for an insurance quote there are now three little buttons hidden within the flight booking process where you have to opt out of having an insurance quote sent to your email address by an out side insurance company.

This is a very annoying process as what you get is the email as below from them making it look like something you have ordered and something that you have to pay - it gives the impression of an outstanding invoice.

Thank you for choosing Elvia for your travel insurance needs.

Your policy document is attached as a ‘pdf’ file (if this file is not attached please call 0818 365040 Monday to Friday 9.00am and 5.00pm), this document contains everything you need to know about the benefits you have selected.
However, to ensure you understand the cover provided, please read the policy schedule carefully.

If you have any queries regarding the level of cover offered please contact our Customer Services department on 0818 365040 (Monday to Friday 10.00am to 4.00pm) who will be happy to assist you. In the event the cover is not suitable for your requirements please contact us within 14 days of policy issue on 0818 365040 and we will cancel the policy and refund all monies paid.

THIS POLICY IS SUBJECT TO PAYMENT BEING ACCEPTED.

I have two real choices when flying from Ireland and I prefer to fly with AerLingus for my own reasons, mainly because I prefer them to their main competitor. This could almost be considered as underhand selling - I wonder how long it will take before there are complaints to the Banking Ombudsman regarding this type of selling and it has to change.

The insurance industry in part got its bad name for this type of “opt out” selling and has been forced generally in the UK to alway offer “opt in” - now that we are buying more and more from the internet companies seem to think that it is okay to revive old disreputable practices once again.

Shame on you AerLingus
