Cycling in Dublin
Well I’ve not been on this one for a while, but it’s getting up there and managing once again to drive me a bit nuts.
In Ireland, and the UK for that matter, car drivers think it is okay to use their vehicles against pedestrians and cyclists. The green light comes on to cross the road but cars are still rolling forward, way past where they should stop and into the area marked for crossing - but hey who is ever going to say anything!
Then the many car drivers that think, or maybe don’t, that the cycle lane is part of their driving lane, so they are quite happy to drive along it or even just park on it - but again while the cops do nothing who is going to bother.
I have lived other places where this does not happen - a lot of people here appear to have become self-important, it didn’t feel like that when I was first here in 97, yes things change. I wonder how self-important I have become?

I may come at this from a different perspective in that I really get pissed at cyclists who think they own the road. Here in the US cars are required to share the road with bicyclists but bicyclists seem to think that they can ride down the middle of the street at 10MPH when the speed limit is 45.
I had a discussion (ha!) a few years ago with a hard core bicyclist, you know the silly helmet and funny shorts type, and he blew me away when he said there was no way he was going to ride his bike on the side of the road because his wheels and tires cost $450 each. I laughted out loud and asked him if he had good insurance. He didn’t get it.

I suppose I am just looking for balance. We have to share that bit of space, and believe me when I am driving cyclist can drive me nuts also. However I am in little danger in my car from being hurt by a cyclist - it is not true the other way, and that is what frightens and angers me.
