On the 1st of July my new online marketing website was launched, and has been reasonably busy.  The site has been up for a while, but I was not punting for work due to other commitments - now I am in full swing as an online marketing consultant.

So what does an online marketing consultant do?

Now that part varies depending on each and every website - I have checklists that I have developed, some of these I talk about on the seo blog.  However here follows the basics: I check first that whole websites are indexed properly with Google, that is that Google knows about all the page on the site. This is always first on the list - no point trying to market something that basically does not exist.

Next I check all descriptions in the meta tags on every page and at the same time the page titles.  These two are very important information that is very easy to control and signal to search engines what the page is about.  This can take some time as it will often involve keyword research and discussion with clients on where they see their business going in the next few years - are they entering new markets?

Next is the actual page copy, too many website have been messed with by other internet marketing consultants and the page copy sometimes reads like it was written by a machine.  Page copy should read well for people - that is the market - too many people have written page copy aimed at search engines - this does not work any more, if it even did in the past.  However page copy should contain the key words that are being targeted for that page and for the whole site.

Competition research fits in here also.  Sometimes if it is complicated I will do this first - it can be fairly easy to get a quick overview in this area.

Then build links - this is where I earn my money as far as I am concerned.  Building links is getting harder all the time.  People are VERY aware that a link from their site to somewhere else has a worth - and it seems just now that everyone wants something for that - often just straight forward cash - and some seem to thing that silly money is due them!
