Bloody Irish Driving!

by Leslie on April 5, 2007

Watch your toes.

Here comes another weekend of crap Irish driving and more carnage on the roads all over Ireland. Bank holiday weekend are favourites for drivers killing themselves and others with their bloody stupid and careless driving.

Careless was the common thread when it was talked about last week on Sluggers blog. I think of careless as couldn’t and don’t care, about anybody.

Holiday weekends in Ireland are great times to get sloshed and do your damnedest with your car, but that is not the only issue.

There is a cultural issue at work here. All the time people in Ireland walk into you and blithely say “sorry” – do they really care?   It’s more like – you were in my way!   I don’t care, but as my culture says I have to say sorry now. When do you here people saying “excuses me?” Not very often, one would have to care to say that.

This translates to get “out of my way” on the roads. So yes, I admit, I am saying that the Irish are bad drivers simply due to their thoughtless mind set, their culture, and the attitude of “I am more important than you, now move.”

At Winds and Breezes it is said much better than me:

“Irish people, in many, many ways, are total babies. They need to be watched and minded and prevented from harming themselves. When – if – we ever get around to enforcing traffic legislation they will then throw their toys out of the pram about points, licence loss, jail.”

Donal helps me reinforce my final point. Where the hell are the Garda? Have you ever tried phoning them? It is truly a waste of time, mostly. Instead of standing pointing speed cameras at drivers in areas where there are rarely any accidents, try just walking to Dame Street and stop some of the multitude of drivers that are blasting through the red lights all day long, with complete impunity.

I hope I am wrong for this coming weekend, I am heading off for the weekend on a long drive to the west – as are many of my friends. I want to see at least one weekend where we can stand up and shout – NOBODY KILLED THIS WEEKEND ON THE ROADS.

I echo those final sentiments and pray that nobody dies on our roads this long weekend.

Let’s hope that it can be realised, and then let that be newsworthy! I’m not too confident of it happening though.
