This is one of the places where the Canadians encourage you to stop and part with some dollars for their amusement.  Hell’s Gate was fine, but not really anything much to see just lots of rushing water.  They would certainly not get people on the way back as what lies ahead is so much more interesting, oh and I hate bloody cable cars.

By this point the Rockies are getting fairly spectacular anyway.  The driving here is so civilized it is scary.  I remember once driving through Switzerland and the traffic slowing down to obey the speed limit signs.  Well it is the same here except they don’t get to go fast to start with.  The fastest speed limit is 100km per hour, and drivers on the whole stay pretty much around or below this.

On the theme of driving they have these four way junctions where no-one has the right of way - it works.  Now I don’t know if I should be giving way at any of these, but hell I get through them quick.

Banff is one cute and very expensive little town that lives on summer tourists then quite quickly afterwards their winter season starts.  I think it is almost impossible to get a hotel room here for less then $200 per night, with boiled eggs and muffins for breakfast.  Seriously they love their eggs and muffins, every hotels since Vancouver has had this for breakfast.

Talking of hotels we had booked into the Banff Aspen Lodge over the internet for 5 nights.  We left after one night.  I must admit complete disappointment when we first arrived.  We had paid a good amount of money for something we thought was going to be very nice - but instead the Aspen has seen too many visitors without much upgrading or looking after.   Deciding that it was not worth the money we moved a few doors down into the Banff Inn - very nice, the rooms are not as big, but bigger bed where we don’t roll into the middle during the night and the lights work - over all more comfortable.

Anyway enough for now, and since today is a rest day maybe another post this afternoon showing some of the Rockies and our walks.

I am now in the Holiday Inn in downtown Vancouver it is 2 in the morning and I can’t sleep.  Lesson 1.  don’t sleep so much on the plane on the way over and sleep as much as possible on the way back.

One of the next lessons - have all the software on the computer that you take with you - I didn’t get around to adding one program that we use for photos all the time…

First impressions of Vancouver are good, clean, feels safe, not too hot, and it is very relaxed.  More when I get better  hand eye coordination. So here is our first picture of Vancouver.

This is one of the rivers running through the city, loads of boat on it and planes use too.  I am now away to try and sleep once again.

I am looking forward to it - but…

There is always a but!

I hate flying and I have two long flights - so sleeping tabs are in order and hopefully that will knock me out for a good bit of it.

Also no computer or phone for three weeks - that will be quite something. But I went on holiday last year for three weeks and had the computer - it is kinda hard to switch off from work when the computer is right there with me. But I wonder about withdrawal symptoms. Every morning I check the stats on my websites while having my morning coffee - this willl be interesting.

However I am looking forward to lots of walking and hopefully take loads of great photos to share here.

Their satisfaction with specific elements of their holiday here was very consistent: beautiful scenery (90%); friendly people (86%); natural, unspoilt environment (80%); and safety and security (78%).”

Thousands of these visitors gravitate unerringly to Galway beguiled by the city’s magical reputation and a host of travellers’ tales.

I have not turned into a guru in any field, I have not become famous or infamous, yet… Still this little blog of mine has about 100 visitors everyday and that has surprised me. I make almost no money from here, but then again I have not tried on this site to make money.

I just like writing, if I go a week without writing anything here I start to feel a bit guilty. Well shortly I am off to the Canadian Rockies and I will have three weeks without a thing here or in any of the other places I write on the web. No computer, no stats - for three weeks, it is a holiday so no I will not be checking my mail or checking my phone for messages, not this year. Last year I went away for three weeks and took my computer with me - not a great idea. My head just can’t be in two places at the one time.

I have a good life. I have a good life. I have a good life. I don’t say that enough. I get up every day and look forward to my day and often towards work - I like what I do, and I have become quite good at it. I live with a great woman - who hates if I mention her here - so that is enough. And I live in a country that is very easy to live in. Top 4% of the world - quite something, I think it is too easy to forget stuff like that, and start complaining about what I’m not getting.

I am so glad I was born.

Downings, which is located in North West Donegal, Ireland is one of the most scenic areas on the Atlantic Ocean. And, the facilities on offer for a complete and relaxing family holiday are second to none. One proviso though, the weather. Sometimes the wind gets up but for the serious windsurfer, this is a boost.

The area around Downings, including Carrigart, is very much tourist oriented with golden sandy beaches, breathtaking scenery, four golf courses, equestrian center, angling facilities (with various charter boats), sub aqua facilities, indoor leisure center (with swimming pool, gym and sauna) open to the public. The local GAA Club has its own gym, which is also open to the public and they hold various training camps during the summer months.

So, to give the parents a break, you can sign up for a week’s activities for the children who will improve their football skills and also learn the Irish language. The Downings beach hosts an annual windsurfing and raft racing competition each August and is an ideal and safe beach for swimmers. Downings also hosts a festival over the August bank holiday with many attractions especially for the younger generation. The Rosapenna Hotel complex includes two quality golf courses and in August each year, you can partake in the open week with prizes galore on offer. In the Rosgoill peninsula, there are four hotels, three independent restaurants and a number of lounge bars and public houses. There are approximately 300 holiday homes in the immediate area. These have been built over a period extending back several years, but there is presently a substantial short fall of holiday properties available. This has been brought about by the seven-year cap imposed on the construction of holiday homes within residential areas. The effect of this limit is that the proportion of holiday homes to conventional residences cannot exceed a maximum of twenty percent.

That proportion has largely been reached already in the Downings, Carrigart, Glenree and immediate surrounding areas. The effect of this is that any properties that have prior planning without the residential clause will attract strong levels of demand. The strong demand for holiday homes arises primarily from the development of the several golf courses in the Downings and Rosapenna areas including, in particular, the 36-hole Rosapenna golf course originally designed by Tom Morris. Work has also started on a Jack Nicklaus 36-hole golf course, presently under construction and within approximately 2 miles from Carrigart and 4 miles from Downings. Planning has also been granted for two more large hotels. A marina has also been mentioned as a possibility in Mulroy bay.

The majority of the market for holiday homes over the past 10 years has been from Northern Ireland due to its close proximity and accessibility, being no more than about two hours away. A large percentage of these purchasers would have come on holidays here with their parents as children and have now grown up and have young families themselves. The tourist season now extends right throughout the year with holiday homes being in constant use during the summer months and most weekends throughout the winter apart from the month of December. However, this area has now effectively become a Golf Mecca and is likely to attract interest in holiday homes from as far away as America and Japan. Whether a walker, cyclist, golfer, windsurfer, fisherman, diver, you will find that the Downings area will cater for your every need.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office in Ireland show that there was another big jump in the number of people on the Live Register last month. The number of job seekers signing on for dole payments rose by almost 1,000 per day during the month of June, by far the highest amount ever recorded. It brought the total on the dole to 220,811 - the highest for a decade, worrying us all.

It we multiply this up over the months left to Christmas, well its not good. Better leave it at that. However something rather interesting is stirring in the land. The number of small and micro businesses start ups is going up. So maybe when things are good and we all have jobs the motivation to start our own businesses is not strong. When that climate alters it stimulates us to start looking at our options. It is interesting to note that adversity or the threat of adversity stimulates entrepreneurial spirit much more than plentiful jobs.

So can it be a good time to start a micro business when there is so much uncertainty. Maybe - the micro business is the only business that we soul be considering in these uncertain times. Maybe - gone are the days of the big big loans, big gig risk, long payback times and reliance on a buoyant economy. Maybe - we are growing into the time when small is beautiful when it comes to our new business set ups. Maybe - sustainability in our business structure today has as much meaning as the need for constant growth in the previous decade.

Henry Street is located just off O’Connell Street (Dublin’s main thoroughfare) right in the heart of the city. If heading north on O’Connell Street, just take a left at ‘The Spire’ and you’re there!

Henry Street is definitely the place to go if you want to shop ’til you drop, as it’s literally overflowing with shops and it’s pedestrianised too. It’s home to the Jervis Centre, which is the largest shopping centre in Dublin city centre, with every kind of shop located under the one roof. Another popular shopping centre on Henry Street is the Ilac Centre, which is home to shops like Roches Stores, Dunnes and Argos.

A visit to Arnotts is a must when shopping in Henry Street. It opened in 1843 so it’s one of the oldest in the city! It’s a particulary good place to stop off if you’re looking for clothing, houseware and cosmetics.

Other notable shops on Henry Street include Penny’s, Marks & Spencers, Debenhams, HMV and some high street stores like Oasis, A-Wear, Sasha, Zara and River Island.

While on Henry Street it’s really worth taking a stroll down Moore Street - a colourful and lively market area which has become an attraction in itself!

Grafton Street is home to the fashionable Brown Thomas store where you can buy designer gear, so if you’re looking for Gucci, Prada or Chanel head here.

Other shops to be found on this street include Vero Moda, Next, A-Wear, Oasis and some designer stores like Pia Bang, Karen Millen, Ted Baker, Laura Ashley and Reiss.

At the top of Grafton Street, you’ll see the St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, which has over 100 shops under one roof. It’s a definite stop-off if you’re a visitor to Dublin as it’s got some very good gift and souvenir shops.

When the shopping is done, take the time to soak up the atmosphere on the street, as Grafton Street is renowned for its street entertainment. It was here, in fact, that many famous musicians started their career like Glen Hansard and Damien Rice who both started off as buskers on this very street!

If you want to be close to Grafton Street then choose Dublin hotels like Buswells Hotel, the Central Hotel, O Callaghan Mont Clare Hotel, Premier Suites Dublin Stephen’s Hall, the Grafton Capital Hotel, the Westbury Hotel, Brooks Hotel, Drury Court Hotel or the Conrad Hotel.

There are also some really good shopping centres outside Dublin city. If you’re going shopping at the Liffey Valley Centre we suggest you stay at the nearby Clarion Hotel Dublin Liffey Valley, for the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre stay at the Ballymum Plaza, or the Park Plaza Tyrrelstown. For The Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght, stay nearby at the Abberley Court Hotel or if you’re heading for the Dundrum Shopping Centre, stay at the Stillorgan Park Hotel.

Resolved - see bottom

Bloody hell - before I went on holiday I checked with them that I could add a data pack - yes no problem I was told €10 for 10MB - and now I find that there is no add on for data rooming for the iphone.

Can they possibly get their operators to give out the correct information? If I had known this I would have left the dam phone switched off.

My work is on websites and when I am out of Ireland I would like a quick and easy way to access the internet, but this is not possible with the Irish wireless providers. My mobile broadband costs €30 per month - but if I want to use it abroad and have a data pack added it costs another €50 per month and I have to add it to the account for a minimum of six months.

201 euro for this I could just pay for a mobile broadband charge for a whole year in the Czech Republic, which is where I was.

Anyway I am writing this post while still on the phone querying this o2 - this call has lasted 20 minutes so far and the previous one a few hours ago was also more than 20 minutes. We are at the stage of me wanting to talk to a supervisor as they have no record of me making the request for a product that does not exist.

I love me iphone - I can write this quite easily while listing to the hold music on o2 - it would be nice if it changed after a while for customers like me who are waiting a huge amount of time to get some satisfaction from them. And I also must admit this is the first time that o2 have given me so many problems - it does appear that their staff are not yet trained on the iphone tariff structure.

We are now up to 26 minutes on hold to speak to a supervisor - I want to get this sorted today Please….

I will update this post with the result.

UPDATE - this will not be the last of this post: oh and the last call lasted for 49 minutes… is this costing me more to fix than just paying?

I went searching around the internet as I thought I couldn’t be the only one to have this problem and found this thread on the o2 site where they admit they were wrongly trained in the products avilable. I have now let them know about this and I am waiting for a further reply.

After I found the last thread I called them back and asked to speak to the same team leader - Paddy.  I was transfered to Mark P (don’t want to add full name as I did not ask his permission).  Anyway I explained again quickly the problem and asked for his mail address to send him the links from the forum - he did not need as he also found the same link - asked me if it was okay to call me back shortly.

He did and resolved the whole situation - credit for the roaming charges and some credit for the time I spent with it all today.  This is a very good out come and what I would expect really - well a bit more than I expected.  Mark confirmed that currently there are no data roaming packages for the iphone - this will change in time I am sure - it is still a bit of a novelty. I am delighted with the outcome and once again o2 have eventually proved to me that I chose the right company to have my mobile service with.

On the iphone itself - well that is for a future blog - I love it, the touch pad for text and internet browsing takes a little getting used to - but I would tell everyone to get one.

And rightly you may ask, why the hell am I writing about this just now?  Bloody good question, as one would hope that I am 30 or more years away from this.

I spent the weekend in Prague, while there we visited the other half’s parents.  A seniors community living would be great for them - the type of thing that I describe for myself - however it seems that the Czech market for nursing homes is not yet as advanced as Ireland or the UK.  Now I know there are other that would consider their way is better with older people being looked after by their family - sorry people but if you think this still you are living in wonder land.

All of Europe has become so busy that the life style of having time to look after older parents has changed - both in most marriages work, and work too long and late into the day to have the time to spend with their own children and look after their parents.

I reckon by the time I am ready to be carted off we might have something more like the various options they have in the sates - I so hope so.
