Anna tells me that this type of post is fairly boring for her. What type – well the ones were I go on about a new site and really what I am doing is just building some links to that site. Why build a link, you may ask?
Search engine optimization is the “art” by which web site owner get search engine to look at their site well. The first part of this is getting them to just look at your web site. Many people think that you just build a web site put it up on the internet somewhere and if it is any good people will find it. This leave a good many web masters disappointed and a lot of good sites out there that we never get to see, as the internet i.e. Google, MSN, and Yahoo! do not work that way.
When a new site is put up nothing happens – it is that simple. Family and friends that you have told about the site visit it – that is it.
Sites need to get into the indexes of the search engine – Google, MSN, and Yahoo! – if they don’t you will never be able to find them unless the whole URL is typed into the address bar at the top.
So you have two options – only two. You can take the long road and go and enter your site in the search engines new site page, then sometime during the next year they might visit your site. This is the long way, very long. Alternatively you can get a link to your site from another site. Something like this – Prague City and Czech Republic Travel Guide – that is a link, maybe not a very good one given the content of this post, but it is fine to get started.
All the search engine have spiders, it is a program that is set loose on the internet and jumps from link to link all over the internet, (I know this is a very simplified explanation). What I want is for these spiders to find my site and index some of it, once they do that they will always come back. Indexing it means that they copy it into their own database and keep a record of that site. Now it can be found by typing the URL into the search box and not just the address bar, this is a step forward, a big one and a small one at the same time.
For people to find your site using search words, (keywords), or phrases you will need to do this over and over. If you do have an interest in this I have a blog on search engine optimization and it has more information.
