Yip, that is true. I sit in many conversation and hear people say some stuff that is utter crap, and what do I do – well nothing usually. That was not always the case. I had the fun, pleasure and pain of studying English Lit and Philosophy.
Many people when they heard I was studying philosophy would want to get into discussions. Boy, that was an easy way to lose friends and have people dislike me. One person who was ranting at me one day, after having trashed all that I said, lost him temper when I ask “And what are your sources?” That was the end of the discussion.
Then I started to wonder “do I do the same? Do I talk away when I have no real knowledge?” I am essentially not much different from most people, so do I wander away in conversations spouting off while not really having a clue about what I am talking about? God, I hope not – now. But I have a sneaking suspicion that I used to do it as much as everyone else. I am so glad that my memory saves me from many embarrassing moments that I just can’t remember.
So, if I do know they are talking crap and it is not essential to my life or someone else, I try my best to keep my mouth shut, (yes, it is hard). Because, really, no-one likes a smart arse, and I like to be liked as much as the next person.
