So Many People Are Tired

by Leslie on March 16, 2009

I feel like I have tired for a long, long time.  I find it hard to remember the last time I was brimming full of energy.  Last September I think – and that in itself answers one of my questions.

I did not feel this tiredness until I was 27.  At that point in my life I started doing a lot of things that were expected of me, and I worked in a fairly high stress environment – one that I hated, but would not leave because I earned a lot of money.

I ask friends how they are when I meet them – all too often the answer is “I’m tired” so many people seem to be tired.  It can’t be a lack of energy tiredness – most of them are not toiling away on building sites or working manually in any way.  However most are doing jobs that do not excite them in any way.

Sometimes I wonder – is this it?

Those three words I believe speak volumes.  At that point I think some big changes need to be made.  So I have started.  I have taken this week off to stand back from everything and try and clear my head.  I am working many hours – but towards what?

It is time for change; this mediocre life is not doing it any more.

I walked twice across northern Spain – 800km.  I was never tired like this, I was sore and I slept very well – but this is a disinterested tiredness.   I learned how to snowboard in Slovakia for a week – different tiredness again, I was a student and loved most of what I read and I lived a bit more of a sedentary lifestyle – and still this tiredness did not descend upon me.

I started down this internet road because I loved writing and my road has changed somewhere along the line, I write very little now and do lots of other not so interesting things.

Going back to the beginning of this post – last September was the last time I was full of energy, I walked a lot then, I was in the Canadian Rockies on holiday, one of my best ever holidays.  The more active I am the more energy I have generally, when I do things for long periods that are not very interesting well…

Time for some major changes – again.

Awesome…eternal fatigue often means you need to do more, or something different. Most people use it as an excuse for downsizing their life, not growing it.

Yes I agree. So last week I told the week off and went hill walking and did more running – and switched off the news, now that last part really helps.

Also here in Sweden people are very tired during this time of the year. Here in Northern Sweden days are very short about the time of Christmas, as you probably know, hardly any daylight! I suppose all this darkness grows on your mind too and when Spring finally comes we are exhausted!

Spending time outdoors and avoiding the TV seems a good idea!

This is the time when we start to plan our pilgrimages toward Trondheim/Nidaros = Saint Olav. You can walk from the Swedish east coast, crossing the high mountains and finally arrive at the Norwegian west coast. After about 550 kilometers. If you think you need something different why not walk with us to Trondheim?

I came across your blog when I was researching the Santiago route. I’m really interested in this blog post. You should read ‘Follow Your North Star’ by Martha Beck and ‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron. Tiredness is a feeling that we often get when we are living the wrong life, that is, not moving towards our ‘north star’.

I agree with your thoughts on my tiredness – but for a while something have to be done that I do wish to do for a long time. All the best.

Part of my planned recovery from that was hill walking and more jogging – both seem to have helped. And I have cut down on the stuff that perhaps lead me into that tiredness.
