Some days I Hate Dublin

by Leslie on March 14, 2008

Just some days, not every day. But today is one of those days, I don’t see anything good about Dublin as I walk through. It started with my taxi this morning – he hates the government, many do right now as they watch the farce of honest Bertie.

I went to where we had arranged to have lunch, I had never been there before – Avoca on Suffolk St – I will never be back either, though we did not stay to eat and we saw the prices. I obviously don’t keep up very well with inflation – but €16 for a plate of pasta – you’re taking the piss at that point, so if you have more money than sense…

But later walking home I noticed how many junkies, drunks, and beggars are on Dublin’s streets. I know this is the case all the time but often I just don’t notice, but today I just could not get away from them all. A fight broke out on Grafton Street between a shop lifter and a security guard – the police arrived after ten minutes – ten minutes! Were they on a tea break? This is the busiest street in Ireland and it takes the police more than ten minutes to get there, and once they arrive they are rude and aggressive with onlookers, public servants?

Tomorrow I am sure it will be different, but today I wonder if anyone cares.

UPDATE

Until today, (24th Feb 2010), this post had 38 comments.  The last comment made me realise that it had all gotten a bit out of hand – so I have deleted all the comments.

I have live in Ireland for nearly 13yrs – if I had lived anywhere for that amount of time I would have had days where I was really pissed off.  But I have lived here for 13 years and this country and its people have been good to me.  I would never have stayed anywhere for this amount of time if there was not something.

So enough – if you do want to share something keep it balanced and keep it clean.

I really only meant some days – most of the time I do like living here and feel very privileged at the way of life we have.
