I was quite lucky while I was a student in that I did not have to stay around during the summer and work, I managed to get away every summer. However I had some problems with storage for my stuff and lost some of my precious books.
I would move out of my apartment some time in June and not move back until Uni was starting back at the end of September. So there was always the problem of where all my stuff was going to live for the summer.
Twice I used a storage room in college and came back to a few books missing. I love my books and this used to drive me nuts. Anyway doing some work recently and came across a site that offers student storage for the summer, that is just one of their services – but boy I could have used this.
At a starting price of only €10 per week I could have my books safely locked up in a secure storage unit for €120 for the summer – now that would have made life easier, instead of depending on other students to leave my stuff alone – books are never scared while at college. I used to see people hide books in the library during term time. They would take the book from where it was meant to be and return it somewhere else – this way you could be almost guaranteed that no-one else would find your book and make off with it. I spent so much money on books during first year that it was never feasible to keep up that sort of spending.
I must however I loved being a student and would happily go back there if I had the same income as I have now – not really possible. Just think of it: to spend all the time reading and writing about books – what else in the world could be so much better.
I do still read a load and writing has become part of what I do for a living, so in some ways much of the fun has gone from a lot of it now – unless I get to write here or on something that I really like.
Anyway back to work and dream about my next holiday – at the end of the month I am off for a week, cool…
