Today Summer Starts

by Leslie on May 1, 2008

I have the window open while writing this, it is blowing a cool breeze over me. It does not feel like summer and in Scotland where I grew up we would never have described May as summer – too bloody cold.

However in Ireland today is the first day of summer. I hope there is much better to come. Last year we had summer in May, then it rained for the rest of the summer. But, yes, I will concede that the weather is much better now than only a few weeks ago when it was still freezing.

May is normally the month in Ireland with the lowest rainfall. It is a great month for hill walking and there are many great walks around the country to enjoy. Ireland has a temperate climate, usually not too hot or too cold – how ever that is not alway the case.

Two years ago we sweltered in the heat. The temperatures rose above 30 degrees – and of course we all complained that it was too hot, too hot to do anything. That year we were trapped one day on the Wicklow Hills by the burning fires – too much heat here can pose a real danger.

I look forward to an average summer, Ireland is comfortable at its average 22 to 23 degrees, please come soon.
